People regularly ask me how I manage to stay above board, despite the some of the life challenges that we all go through. One of the biggest questions is how I managed to multitask and achieve my goals in an environment that makes it very difficult to succeed. I would like to share some of the secrets that may apply to us all:
My first secret and piece of advice is to find your true potential. It’s a process and if you start sooner rather than later you will be amazed at what you can achieve. On my 21st birthday, an old friend from America, who worked in an orphanage centre that cooked for us, gave me a globe as a present and said to me, “The world is in your hands”. I realised that the key to unlocking all of my dreams was right there in my hands.
My second secret of success is persistence. If you know me or follow me on social media, you’ve likely seen it in action. To me, persistence means trying, trying again, and keeping on trying until you achieve the desired result. Although I am focused on the end goal, my emphasis really is on the process of persistence rather than the outcome. The difficulty is that persistence can be interpreted as tenacity or even obstinacy — and people around you can become quite confused. I’ve had to “lose” friends on more than one occasion because of my commitment to staying the course. But when I want something, I’m driven to give it my all, despite any and all disappointments, rejections, disapproval, or other setbacks.
My third secret is this: I have come to accept that I am not perfect. One of the reasons I had to retake Grades 10, 11 and 12 was because I refused to come to terms with the fact that I needed help. There are so many people who, and I hope you are not one of them, never go forward in life because they can’t own up to their flaws. It is incredibly difficult to provide assistance to someone who won’t even admit they need it. My older brother Maxwell attempted to help me with my studies, particularly Mathematics, when I was in Grade 10, but he fell short of his goal because I failed to accept that I was not perfect.
My last secret is the relationship I built with God a while ago. I can still recall that fateful Tuesday afternoon in 2001 when I was in sixth grade. Mr. Dlamini read from Romans 10:9 and immediately I understood how easy and accessible it was to build a relationship with God. That single act changed the course of my life, and it may do the same for you if you take that step. Embrace the opportunity to experience growth and transformation as God takes you to a higher level.
Plan of Action for the Day:
1. Identify your true potential by exploring different areas of life that excite you and might provide results.
2. Practice persistence and focus on the process of achieving goals rather than the outcome.
3. Acknowledge you are not perfect while seeking help from trusted sources.
4. Build a spiritual relationship by initially reading scriptures and eventually praying and reflecting.
5. Make deliberate decisions and take consistent action to prove commitment to your goals.
6. Surround yourself with supportive people who motivate and validate your progress.
7. Remain humble and be ready to learn from life experiences, both successes and failures.
8. Adapt to new circumstances and challenges, while continuing to stay positive.
9. Reflect and celebrate small wins to have the motivation to keep going.
10. Look for creative solutions, identify opportunities and use resources effectively.
